Treatments and Blocks
The terms treatment and block are used to describe two classification factors used in analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Data for analysis of variance are conventionally arranged into treatment columns and block rows:
Treatment | |||||
1 | 2 | ... | k | ||
Block: | 1 | X(1,1) | X(1,2) | X(1,k) | |
2 | X(2,1) | X(2,2) | X(2,k) | ||
... | |||||
b | X(b,1) | X(b,2) | X(b,k) |
The rows often represent data from individuals who have been studied, blocks are therefore sometimes referred to as subjects instead of blocks.
