Who we are

StatsDirect Ltd, registered in England and Wales, publishes the StatsDirect software, runs this website and is the data controller for the personal information described here. Contact: info@statsdirect.com.

The University of Liverpool will soon publish the software. Until then, StatsDirect Ltd remains the publisher and data controller. This page will then name the new publisher, and any records held by StatsDirect Ltd will pass to it for the same purposes or be deleted.

The software

StatsDirect runs on your computer. It has no user accounts and sends no usage information. Your data, reports and scripts stay with you. It uses the internet only to:

  • Check for a new version when it starts, by reading our download page; your internet address reaches our server log.
  • Fetch software you ask for: R from CRAN, and the ChatGPT tutor runtime from GitHub, each with your agreement.
  • Run the optional ChatGPT tutor, which you sign in to with your own ChatGPT account. Your questions go to OpenAI; your open documents are shared only when you confirm it for that question, and you can withdraw that permission at any time. OpenAI's privacy policy applies to what it receives.

This website

Our server logs each request: internet address, time, page or file, and browser. We use the logs to run and secure the site and to count downloads, and keep them only as long as that needs. The site uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies and reports page views to Google under Google's privacy policy; blocking those cookies loses nothing. There are no other cookies and no accounts. Messages you send us are kept while we deal with them.

Basis and rights

We rely on our legitimate interest in running and securing the software and the site for logs, the version check and analytics, and on your consent for what the tutor sends. We do not sell personal information, use it for advertising or make automated decisions about you. Under the UK GDPR you may ask what we hold about you and ask us to correct, delete, restrict or hand over your information: write to info@statsdirect.com, or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Neither the site nor the software is directed at children. If this policy changes, the new version appears here with its date.
